RUBBERBAND returns with Vic’s Mix, a celebration of Victor Quijada’s 15 years of making dance—not only for his own company but for Hubbard Street Dance Chicago and Scottish Dance Theatre as well.

Sankai Juku

For the first time in 20 years, Sankai Juku, Japan’s internationally renowned butoh dance troupe, returns to Hancher. Butoh, which has been called Japan’s most startling cultural export, is enthralling, surprising, and often deeply moving. Utsushi is the perfect introduction to the work of Sankai Juku.

Urban Bush Women

Hair & Other Stories investigates issues of body image, race, gender identity, economic inequity, and more. Urban Bush Women—a contemporary dance company committed to pushing the boundaries of storytelling through spoken word, movement, and singing—enacts the everyday pursuit of the extraordinary.

Audition / Casting for American Ballet Theatre’s "Whipped Cream"

American Ballet Theatre is casting Supers (extras) for Alexei Ratmansky’s Whipped Cream at Hancher Auditorium.


SUPERNUMERARY REQUIREMENTS

Dance experience not required, but movement / acting is helpful

  • Males and Females, age 8 – 12; Height: 4’3” to 4’6”
  • Males and Females, age 13 - 50; Height: 5’3” to 6’2”

Supers must be available for ALL rehearsals and performances.

In June, Thursday Nights at Hancher become Family Fun Nights at Hancher!

Join us each Thursday night in June for free events celebrating the arts! Family Fun Nights coincide with Thursday Nights at Hancher from 5:30 to 7 pm.

June 14: Celebrating Dance

Nolte Academy of Dance will present a Q&A with Wendy Whelan, a former principal dancer with New York City Ballet and subject of the documentary Restless Creature: Wendy Whelan. Open to students of all ages.

Batsheva Dance Company

Under the artistic direction of choreographer Ohad Naharin, Israel’s Batsheva Dance Company has built a global reputation for excellence. The company stands apart from other modern dance companies, offering a singular and arresting approach to choreography and individual movement.

American Ballet Theatre

A young boy overindulges at a Viennese pastry shop and falls into a delirious dream, filled with sugary heroes who come to his rescue. A dollop of delightful whimsy for the entire family, featuring costumes and sets from the mind of pop surrealist visionary Mark Ryden.

Momix

The endlessly imaginative and energetically physical dance company Momix returns to Hancher to present Opus Cactus—a much-loved work grounded in the teeming life and landscape of the American southwest.

Nachte Raho

Nachte Raho has been a thriving cultural program at the University of Iowa.  The tremendous success of our show over the past few years, has quickly made us one of the biggest intercollegiate dance competition in the Midwest. Our competition will feature the dance style of Bollywood Fusion. Traditionally, eight teams are chosen among a range of applicants to compete in Iowa City. For the competition, each team prepares an eight to ten minute dance routine to compete for $3,000.
