Our History: From President Hancher’s Vision to Today

In 1945, University of Iowa President Virgil M. Hancher (1940–1964) expressed his hope that the university would build a hall worthy of the world’s finest performing artists. He hoped to develop a tradition of performing arts, complementing the thriving visual and literary arts scenes on campus. While President Hancher did not live to see his dreams realized, Hancher Auditorium (opened in 1972; reopened in 2016) carries his name in perpetuity. His vision continues to inspire students, faculty, staff, community members, and artists.

At the first opening in 1972, architect Max Abramovitz declared, “The cultural life of Iowa will never be the same.” In addition to presenting emerging and renowned touring artists, the auditorium hosted University of Iowa student performances, commencements, and community events. Over the years, Hancher earned an international reputation as a commissioner of new work in a number of artistic disciplines.

After a catastrophic regional flood in 2008, the auditorium closed; its original structure was demolished and removed. While planning a new, future facility, the Hancher team presented artists in a variety of local venues and across Iowa—deepening its relationship with the community and the state.

The new auditorium—designed by architect Cesar Pelli and built in collaboration with Iowa-based OPN Architects—opened its doors to the public on September 9, 2016. The hallmarks of Hancher’s history, over many chapters of challenge and opportunity, continue to glow in the organization’s sustained commitment to the arts, culture, and community.

Rooted in the spirit of creativity, collaboration, and exploration found on the University of Iowa’s campus, Hancher is a core element of Performing Arts at Iowa–the collaborative network of performing arts units at the University of Iowa, including the Department of Dance, Department of Theatre Arts, Performing Arts Production Unit, and School of Music.
