SEN. SANDERS SET TO VISIT HANCHER ON AUG. 31

Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., will be making a return to Iowa City in August as part of a tour to discuss his new book. Iowa City’s famed independent bookstore, Prairie Lights, 15 S. Dubuque St., has announced it will bring Sanders to Hancher Auditorium, 141 E. Park Rd., on Aug. 31. at 7 p.m. after the release of his book, Bernie Sanders Guide to Political Revolution, according to a press release.

It’s that time of year again, when theaters begin to announce their 2017-18 seasons, and Hancher Auditorium is no different. Now in its second year in its new building, Hancher promises another great lineup for the season. This season is unique for Hancher because it marks its 45th anniversary. Hancher Education Manager Micah Ariel James said the success of this year’s season has created an excited, and maybe even anxious, feeling around the facility.

Hancher Auditorium’s doors opened with fanfare Sept. 9, and in the nearly nine months since, more than 100,000 people have stepped into a new era for the University of Iowa’s premiere arts and entertainment venue. The first year has flown by for Chuck Swanson, Hancher’s executive director. “It is so hard to believe,” he said. The staff received the keys to the building June 1, and now that the first season has ended, he said it feels like the fastest of his 32 years with the organization.

I wasn’t really sure what to expect from /peh-LO-tah/. A new, multi-disciplinary work considering soccer and the African American experience. But Thursday night rolled around and it was showtime. The front half of Hancher’s theater was packed, and there was a certain excitement in the air, the excitement coming from not knowing what to expect. That feeling continued even as the lights went down and the show started.
'The Pirates of Penzance' coming to Hancher stage

Devout fans of literature and aspiring writers sat down under the lights of the beautiful Hancher Strauss Hall to hear a reading from multi-genre author and Pulitzer-Prize finalist Kelly Link. Link began the reading with a haunting yet humorous passage from her short story, “I Can See Right Through You.” In a somewhat conversational manner, she functioned as a ghost-story teller by the campfire, depicting the tale of an actress’ run-ins with fame, a demon lover, and a missing nudist colony.

Opening for Andrew Bird on Tuesday evening, My Brightest Diamond was unfamiliar to many concert goers. But these attendees absolutely left the show as fans, springing to their feet in a standing ovation. The new Hancher stage premiered its first ever Mission Creek Festival performance with My Brightest Diamond, fronted by alternative singer-songwriter and multi-talented musician Shara Nova.
