Urban Bush Women Hair Party

Hair Party (Getting It Done!) With Urban Bush Women

Thursday, September 19, 2019, 7:00 pm to 8:30 pm
Sold Out

Note: Registration is full for this event.

We are excited to present this event in partnership with the African American Museum of Iowa as part of their 2019-2020 temporary exhibit, Untangling the Roots.

Using the deceptively simple topic of HAIR as the organizing principle – how hair color, length, and varying degrees of curl affect our definitions of 'good hair' and 'bad hair' both within and outside of the African American community – this event will encourage participants to re-examine closely-held beliefs about themselves, society, class, race, gender, age and individual beauty. Political, fun and sometimes raucous, this Hair Party will combine conversation, guided movement explorations, and performance highlights from UBW's dance/theater piece Hair and Other Stories.

This intimate, informal gathering will use performative elements of Hair and Other Stories to engage audiences of all backgrounds and ignite dialogue. This event is free, but space is limited, so an RSVP is required to attend. In order to assure that all interested will be able to attend, we ask that you only RSVP if you are certain that you will be able to attend this event.
