John Irving is one of the foremost writers of the 20th and 21st centuries. He is the author of several books, including the novels The Cider House RulesThe World According to Garp, and most recently The Last Chairlift. He was also inducted into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame in 1992. A graduate of the Iowa Writers' Workshop, Irving returns to our campus and community to discuss his life and creative process alongside Iowa Writers' Workshop director Lan Samantha Chang.

John Irving: Part of Infinite Dream

Literary icon John Irving returned to Iowa City’s writing community on Friday, where he was welcomed by a sold-out Hancher audience. At 81 years old, Irving still has several novels left to write. He said he saved the shorter and easier ones for later in life. During the Hancher appearance, in conversation with Iowa Writers’ Workshop program director Lan Samantha Chang, Irving said he has written 14 chapters of his in-progress novel “Honor’s Child.”

Hancher Auditorium introduces the new Infinite Dream Festival. The Infinite Dream Festival is a multidisciplinary festival that explores the American Story's complex fabric, celebrating its accomplishments and failures through music and discussion. Starting on Oct. 11, the festival will feature performances, presentations, and discussions from artists and thinkers as well as students, faculty, and staff from the University of Iowa. The Infinite Dream festival runs through Saturday, Oct. 21.

Hancher is introducing a new multidisciplinary festival — Infinite Dream — from Oct. 11 to 21, at various venues around Iowa City. Through the lens of the arts, the festival explores the complex fabric of the American Story: grand accomplishments, disruptive failures and potential for excellence.
