In collaboration with the Center For Worker Justice, join Rahim AlHaj for an evening of fellowship and conversation about his life and work in advance of his Hancher performance.

Born in Baghdad, Rahim AlHaj is a master of the oud—a stringed instrument with a history dating back thousands of years. Music has been a constant in his life throughout his years as an Iraqi, a political refugee, and now an American citizen.

Join Hancher's Micah Ariel James and Chuy Renteria for a conversation with virtuoso oud musician and composer Rahim AlHaj about the role that art and music have played in his life throughout his years as an Iraqi, a political refugee, and now an American citizen. Hancher’s Embracing Complexity project takes a multidisciplinary and collaborative approach to building understanding of contemporary Islamic cultures and Muslim identity.

Powerhouse clarinetist and composer Kinan Azmeh strives to reach a balance between classical music, jazz, and the music of his homeland, Syria. Azmeh, who is also a member of Yo-Yo Ma’s Silk Road Ensemble, with whom he won a Grammy in 2017, will be joined by his CityBand ensemble for this seminar that is ideal for students studying chamber music, jazz, or composition.

An ode to the traditional late-night jazz sessions behind unmarked doors in Oakland, starting at 4 a.m. in Kansas City, and catching a cab at daylight outside of the original Smalls at 7th Ave and 10th St. Doors will open at 11 p.m. Music will roll until close. $5 entry or free for Witching Hour passholders and musicians with instrument in hand.

Please join UI’s top jazz ensemble in the presentation of a collaborative concert with esteemed jazz bassist, composer and 2018 Ida Cordelia Beam Distinguished Visiting Professor Rufus Reid. JCL will perform Rufus Reid's arrangement of "Round Midnight" and feature him on bass with the band. The concert also includes the performance of Reid’s tribute to saxophonist John Coltrane "Of Regal Patience," Thad Jones’ iconic composition "Three and One," as well as original selections from the suite "Unlikely Characters" by John Rapson.
