Kronos Quartet—the endlessly innovative ensemble that commissioned 50 diverse works to expand how musicians and audiences think about the string quartet—closes the Fifty for the Future adventure with a program featuring eight composers and music drawn from the project catalog and beyond.
Guillermo Galindo confronts the sounds of drone warfare, and Wu Man brings the Uyghur muqam tradition into the string quartet. Susie Ibarra weaves kulintang-inspired rhythms, while Peni Candra Rini honors Javanese sindhen singing. Soo Yeon Lyuh treats the quartet as an extension of the Korean haegeum, Misato Mochizuki conjures a flock of birds, and Angélica Negrón longs for Puerto Rico. Music by Philip Glass—a composer Kronos has championed since the 1970s—brings the evening and this celebratory weekend to a close with the slow, patient approach that has been a hallmark of his work for half a century.
