Fifty for the Future

4 days, 8 ensembles,
10 events, 50 contemporary works,
1 world premiere.

Kronos Quartet and Hancher Auditorium have a deep relationship that dates to the late 1980s. In 2015, the quartet launched Fifty for the Future, a landmark commissioning, performance, and education initiative that has reshaped the contemporary string quartet repertoire with work from composers around the world.

Hancher is thrilled to present all 50 compositions across nine concerts over four days in spaces throughout our facility. In addition, we will present a 51st composition by Peter Shin, co-commissioned in honor of Wally Chappell, Hancher’s longtime executive director, and his legacy with and Kronos Quartet, having served on their board for two decades.

Kronos Quartet and JACK Quartet (another stellar ensemble with strong ties to the university) will anchor the event with two ticketed concerts each.

The five remaining concerts will be free and feature Iowa-based professional ensembles, University of Iowa student musicians, and young players from the Iowa City community. Kronos Quartet will also present a free family concert during the weekend.

What I would like to achieve with Kronos Fifty for the Future is a realignment of possibilities for quartets worldwide. I'm hoping that groups will feel empowered to explore the world in every way musicians can explore and that Fifty for the Future can be a guide for learning and discovery."
