Stop/Time Festival is a two-day, multi-venue, multi-artist spring festival produced by Hancher Auditorium and devoted to innovation and independence in contemporary music and the arts. This is a festival of discovery—opening our ears and minds to new sounds, ideas, and possibilities.
Presented in spaces throughout downtown Iowa City and across the University of Iowa campus, the festival highlights the region’s century-long tradition of creative experimentation. Musicians will present work spanning psych, jazz, creative music, contemporary classical, avant-garde performance, alternative folk, ambient, noise, and electronic sound. Alongside them, writers and interdisciplinary artists will offer readings, activations, and collaborations that extend the conversation across art forms.
Stop/Time welcomes everyone, offering an open invitation to experience new ideas, new collaborations, and new horizons in sound and performance.

FAQs
Our dreams with Stop/Time include: bridging our University of Iowa campus & downtown Iowa City via our incredible arts venues and gathering spaces; activating our creative campus students toward new horizons and aesthetic possibilities with their craft; attracting curious listeners & patrons of the arts from our campus & community, the state of Iowa, and across the Midwest (and beyond… everyone is welcome!); further cementing our campus & community as a creative, inspiring hub for students, faculty & staff, residents, and visitors: the UI and Iowa City as a home for the arts; developing a strong, collective muscle for engaging with the artistic unknown—taking a chance; stepping into new experiences not quite knowing what we’ll get; and finding meaning and transformation in the adventure/the process.
You can attend Stop/Time by purchasing a single-day pass (for Friday or Saturday) events or a two-day pass for Friday and Saturday. The two-day pass and single-day Friday pass grant guarantee admission to all events on Friday. The two-day pass and single-day Saturday pass grant access to all events on Saturday and guarantee admission to all events at The Englert Theatre (Branford Marsalis, Tortoise.) All other events are subject to capacity. If a venue is full, patrons can wait until space opens up or attend a performance at another venue. There are also free events at Stop/Time.
Stop/Time is a festival with several performances rather than a singular presentation at one venue. There will be over 20 unique events on Saturday, April 4, starting from around noon and running until about 11 p.m. at night. It will be a fluid day of presentations. Patrons can stay for entire or partial performances and, as the day goes on, will likely have to make some choices between which artists to see.
All events on Friday, April 3 will occur at Hancher Auditorium in our Up Close and Club Hancher formats. Events on Saturday, April 4 will happen at the center of the University of Iowa’s campus and downtown Iowa City. Saturday venues include The Englert Theatre, Gabe’s, Iowa City Masonic Building, Prairie Lights, Riverside Theatre, UI Museum of Natural History, UI Pentacrest, and Voxman Concert Hall.
Yes! All Stop/Time events are general admission.
There will be seating for all patrons at Hancher Auditorium, The Englert Theatre, Masonic Building, Riverside Theatre, Voxman Concert Hall.
